He hates when the hair gets long and falls in his eyes, but he hates having a hair cut even more. And I mean HATES. We have tried A LOT of techniques: cutting in the tub, cutting when he is busy doing something fun, cutting when he is playing with water in the sink (worked once and never again), bribing with new movie, TV, candy, ice cream, chips etc etc. Still, nothing works. It comes down to a screaming fit that I am sure can be heard miles away. And it is no fun for anyone involved. He literally screams AAAOOOOAAAA each time the scissors cut. Like if he is pain. He cries and begs to not have to do it. Heartbreaking and exhausting.
I happened to see his OT (Occupational Therapist) yesterday at Kindergarten and asked her. She is new. I loved the old one but she is on maternity leave. Anyways, I explained the situation to her, and figured as she is on a special needs team (working out of a special ed school) she might have some tip or at least understanding. Nope. Her answer, and I quote ‘Somethings he will just have to learn and deal with’. Ohh yeah, right. She fell quickly of my popularity chart and next week for the team meeting I will grill her about what her exact plan is for this year.
Last night I tried a new approach. I decided to try to talk him into it and see if he maybe would be willing to sit in his room and in front of the big mirror while I cut his hair. Edgar was there too and I asked him how his hair cut was. Did it hurt? He totally betrayed me and said it hurt a lot… So he was kindly sent off to play in his own room for a while.
I asked Vince if he wanted to sit and brought out the ultimate bribe in form of a new Pringle’s can. He was oh so tempted, but was not willing to let me cut in exchange for Pringles. So I gave up. He kept asking the whole evening for chips and I said you can have them if I can cut your hair. He said yes a few times but when I took a comb out he started crying and saying no. So no deal.
I am guessing we are dealing with a sensory issue. He lets me comb/brush his hair after taking a shower. He loves when I strike his hair while watching a movie. He does not mind me ‘correcting’ his hair during the day. He does really like to have massage type of things done to his face, mouth, head, ears etc (crediting Mr B for that as he did baby massage within EVERY day Vince first year). He lets me brush his teeth and he now wears his glasses daily without issues.
I was tempted to ask if I could cut it after surgery when he was in the recovery room the other week, but I forgot after the rescheduling.
I do not think a buzz cut would do either, he would freak out from the noise I am pretty sure.
