Get it Down: 31 for 21 – Day 1

October is Down Syndrome Awareness month and I will be blogging EVERY day in honor there of. I was doing this last year in October too, and then I blogged about DSevery other day. I am going to try this this year too. It will be both generic DS things and then specific Vincent DS things.

In case any one has missed it, our son Vincent was born on May 12, 2006 with Down Syndrome. It was a huge chock. Never ever in a million year had I expected that. I was in a total chock on Sunday May 14th when the Dr told us about it. I chose to tell all friends via my blog (a few knew before hand). That entry can be read by clicking here. For me, an even bigger chock came a few weeks later when we found out Vince had translocation 21;21 DS. In short that meant if we were carriers of this gene we could only have kids with DS. To read more about that click here and here. We later found out Vince was just a lucky new mutation.

There is no beating around the bush, finding out that Vince had DS sucked. We thought we would be sad for the rest of our lives. Oh how wrong we were!
Having Vince has been such a positive experience. Of course you may argue, any kid changes you. But Vince did not only changes us, he also brought a whole world of new experiences not only for us, but for our extended family and all our great friends. Togther we have learned a lot and still will learn more. It has also brought a long many new friends (cyber and people we also met) that we would not have met otherwise.
To me Down syndrome is no longer (and has not for a loooong time been) something that sucks, but something so magically happy and positive, that I sometimes feel sorry for the people that never get to experience it themselves. It is truly amazing what difference just one tiny little chromosome can do!

Pst. Do hop on over to Tricia, the blog guru who started this whole challenge last year!
